Winchester Rotary Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race

Winchester’s Rotary Pancake Race is one of those wonderfully eccentric traditions that makes the city feel alive. Looking back at the 2023 event — flying pancakes, costumes, and plenty of laughter — it’s easy to see why the 2026 race last Tuesday brought it all back to mind. Pancake races date to Shrove Tuesday, when people would use up rich ingredients before Lent, often dashing to church with a pan still in hand. Winchester keeps that joyful chaos alive, turning a centuries‑old custom into a community celebration that’s as warm as it is whimsical.
