Photographing Winchester City FC with the OM‑D E‑M1 Mark II

March 04, 2026

Winchester City Football Club welcomed Mousehole AFC to the Charters Community Stadium on a day that felt like winter finally loosening its grip. Sunshine stretched across the pitch, warming the stands and hinting at the spring to come — the kind of light that makes colours pop, shadows behave, and football photography feel effortless.

Working With the Olympus OM‑D E‑M1 Mark II and 40–150mm f/2.8 + 1.4x Teleconverter

This setup is made for grassroots football. Light, fast, and responsive, it lets you move freely along the touchline without drawing attention or fatigue.

A few strengths that shine through in your shots:

Reach and flexibility — the 40–150mm paired with the 1.4x teleconverter gives you an effective 112–420mm field of view, perfect for isolating players across the pitch.
Autofocus tracking — the E‑M1 Mark II handles erratic movement well, especially in good light, keeping players sharp even in scrappy moments.
Colour rendering — the bright kits, green turf, and warm sunlight combine beautifully, giving your images a clean, lively palette.
Fast aperture — f/2.8 (or effectively f/4 with the converter) still gives enough separation to lift players from the background, especially near the stands.

It’s a setup that rewards anticipation: reading the play, shifting position early, and letting the action come to you.
