Technostalgia Explained: Why Film and Early Digital Cameras are Trending Again

January 17, 2026

In studying for my MSc in Digital Marketing and Analytics, I was asked to build a website focusing on something that I enjoy. I decided to create my website, and the associated 4,000 word essay, on the renewed popularity of older digitial and film cameras. In my research, I ran across a term I'd never encountered before - technostalgia. In short, it is a sentimental longing or fond reminiscence for past technologies, media, and the experiences associated with them.

The Rise of Technostalgia

From vinyl records to mechanical keyboards, from CRT monitors to cassette tapes, people are gravitating back to devices that offer texture, friction, and personality. These objects remind us of a time when technology felt more physical—when you pressed a button and something clicked, whirred, or advanced. Even outside photography, technostalgia is everywhere: retro gaming consoles, rotary‑style Bluetooth handsets, VHS‑inspired filters, and the warm glow of analogue radios.

What ties all these examples together is a desire for intentionality. Modern tech is powerful, but it often removes the sense of craft. Older tools invite us to slow down, engage, and savour the process.

Where Cameras Fit In

Photography is experiencing the same shift. Compact digital cameras from the 2000s, early CCD‑sensor models, and classic film point‑and‑shoots are all enjoying a genuine comeback. Their quirks—limited dynamic range, grain, colour shifts, the occasional soft edge—aren’t flaws. They’re character. They’re memory. They’re mood. Using these cameras feels different. You take fewer shots. You think more. You reconnect with the moment you’re framing.

Alex Cooke wrote a nice piece on the fstoppers website about technostalgia and the renewed interest in compact cameras. Here's a link to his article: The Compact Camera Comeback Is Real: Why People Want Dedicated Cameras Again

Why It Matters

Technostalgia isn’t about going backwards. It’s about choosing tools that make us feel something. Whether it’s a beloved film camera or a forgotten digital compact brought back to life, these devices help us slow down and truly frame the moment.
